As predicted, or more accurately, threatened by Ségolène Royal, there is violence in the wake of Nicolas Sarkozy’s victory in the French presidential election. The riot and mayhem in the streets of Paris recalls past acts of destruction and outrage at the hands of losing partisans: from the 1996 brawls in Washington, DC, by Dole supporters; to the destructive spree of angry Tories in the City of London in 1997; to the recent smashing of shop-windows by Republicans on 8 November 2006; and yes, to the violence visited upon the hapless City of Light by RPR youth in the aftermath of Mitterand’s 1988 victory in France. The present wreckage on French streets — see an excellent series of photos here — is therefore of a piece with long-established Western tradition.

Methane He Doth Protest Too Much

When we wrote about Gore in our first book, we intended to leave him behind like a chewed-over pastrami sandwich left on a delicatessen table and move on to other Schmucks in our on-going tour of Schmuckville. But he does not permit us to do so.
We believed Al Gore would be happily retired, adrift in his delusions of inventing the Internet and discovering the Love Canal (which, our neighbor Benny, the defrocked pharmacist — who lost his license for selling Viagra to Muslim undertakers to be placed in coffins in case the departed ran out steam when they met their allotted forty virgins — explained had something to do with female anatomy). We thought, like a punch drunk fighter, he would spent the rest of his days boring people, explaining he wuz robbed by the referee, and could’ve been a champion.
However, leaving his Chads behind — and from the look of Gore today — we have an idea of where he stuffed them, he now became the Guru of Global Warming.
Global Warming is a highly politicized subject, so inculcated into our collective psyches by the liberal media as a reality, that notwithstanding the fact hundreds of scientists believe it is a merely a cyclical phenomenon that has existed for thousands of years, to even question its existence relegates you to the insanity of a Holocaust denier.
Gore, with no scientific training, other than that of supporting Clinton’s penetrating explorations into assorted body parts of ladies who had the happy or unhappy experiences of being after hours visitors to the Oval Office, assumed the role of the validator and spokesperson for Global Warming. He even made a movie about it, and in fact won an Academy Award for it.
Suddenly, all of this somehow propelled him into being a potential candidate for President. To prove how serious he was, he started losing weight. We have heard of women who lose weight to get into last summer’s bikini, and of old men who also lose weight to stuff themselves into ancient tuxedos or new young girl friends, but this is a historic first: joining Weight Watchers to become President.
Now, we are not scientists, but, to us, the winters seem colder not hotter. The Carbon Dioxide that is supposed to be the villain, is actually good not bad for trees, which everybody says are good for the planet. In fact, governments all over the world are expending effort and money to preserve the forests and plant new trees. The statistics show that using alternate fuels for automobiles actually costs more (considering government subsidies) and in the long run requires greater overall energy consumption than does gasoline.
Apparently, a great deal of the ozone problem is caused by methane gas, a principal source being the flatulence of cows. Our unworthy thought it may be more efficient and less costly to buy some Gas-X for the cows than the more sophisticated and costly alternative means suggested.
All of Gore’s sputterings might be the proper subject of honest debate, expect for one thing. Gore, as we have all now learned, is patently a hypocrite. He lives in a house that in one week, consumes twenty times the yearly energy use of an average home, and he flies around in private planes consuming vast amounts of fossil fuel and spewing enormous quantities of hurtful gasses into the atmosphere. His justification: He purchases Carbon Credits.
While few in the world can understand exactly what they are, in principle the credits are traded, for a fee, by middlemen, with the extreme offenders of pollution being made to pay money — that, in effect become the “credits.” These are now placed into an exchange, and then sold to other violators — like Gore. All of this does not change the amount of carbon produced one bit, but does produce a profit for the exchange company. Oh yes, did we forget to mention — you guessed it — Gore owns a carbon exchange company?
The proponents of Global Warming say that in a hundred years, the ocean temperature will rise five degrees and, because of melting icebergs, the Atlantic Ocean will extend into the land an additional nine inches. Just in case, we will definitely sell our Miami Beach condominiums in ninety years. Of course, if Gore will just shut up, the hot air lost may be just enough to save the icebergs.
Jackie Mason is a comedian. Raoul Felder is an attorney. Their new book is entitled Schmucks!: Our Favorite Fakes, Frauds, Lowlifes, Liars, the Armed and Dangerous, and Good Guys Gone Bad (HarperCollins). It has been denounced by New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.
It was reported today by Swedish Newspapers that a proposal to build Ethnic Swedish Cultural Schools for Swedish Pre-Schoolers has been developed by the National Democrat party. The goal would be to refocus schools again on education, preserve Swedish Culture and the traditional values of Swedish families. Applications to local councils in Uppsala and Södertälje forthese for these future magnet schools would represent the hope of many to preserve a nation’s eroding national culture and identity.Marc Abramsson, the National Democrat party leader was quoted as saying “It is very important that we can build up a safe and Swedish environment for our children. They can have the best possible start in life by growing up with Swedish culture,” he said.
Persistent Radical Left Wing social experiments and policies have produced a growing social and criminal problem in some Swedish communities. This suffering from the unavoidable problems produced by multiculturalism has hit the education system especially hard. While many see diversity should be celebrated, a society can only function when immigrants are encouraged to integrate. What has been seen here in Sweden and in other countries is that ethnic communities become issolated Islands within their adopted countries. Marc Abramsson recognizes that Sweden resembles eastern Europe under communism, “where they used school to indoctrinate the children.”
The Left Wing politicians and special interest groups focus on special interest groups political agendas and attempt social experiments in Schools. Schools should be left to education. This education should be rich in Swedish history, Culture and values. Mr. Abrahamssons pointed out that politicians use schools to Sweden resembles eastern Europe under communism, “where they used school to indoctrinate the children.” Politicians “promoted homosexuals’ right to adopt”. Why should school children be used to forward political agendas?
Far Left Politics and the indoctrination of children should be left out of the classroom. Mr. Abrahamssons pointed out that Swedish children who are abandoned in multicultural driven schools have a “low self-esteem and lacking an ethnic identity”. “We want to instill children with Swedish values, nationalistic values. We want them to value more things than just earning money, such as honor and respect”
It is to be assumed that the Left Wing with it’s strong hold on the Swedish government and such a heavy political investment in pet projects and politically motivated social experiments will fight Marc Abramsson and the National Democrat Party. Efforts to preserve Swedish Culture, refocusing education on Math, Science, Swedish & World History are seen by the Far Left Swedish Media and the Swedish Left Wing dominated government as counter productive to established political agendas and risk bringing back a sense of National pride to Swedish children.
Supreme Court OKs Abortion Procedure Ban
Doctors who violate the law face up to two years in federal prison.
Hillary Clinton is completely opposed to stopping the brain sucking of babies.
The sucking out of the babies brains is done so that the baby is not alive when it is yanked from the mother when the abortion is completed.
The Supreme Court said that the Law banning this procedure was constitutional.
Clinton Press Release
“This decision marks a dramatic departure from four decades of Supreme Court rulings that upheld a woman’s right to choose and recognized the importance of women’s health. Today’s decision blatantly defies the Court’s recent decision in 2000 striking down a state partial-birth abortion law because of its failure to provide an exception for the health of the mother. As the Supreme Court recognized in Roe v. Wade in 1973, this issue is complex and highly personal; the rights and lives of women must be taken into account. It is precisely this erosion of our constitutional rights that I warned against when I opposed the nominations of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.”
Most-premature baby allowed home
The world’s most-premature baby has finally been allowed to leave a Miami hospital, four months after being born weighing just 280 grams (10 ounces). The hospital said Amillia Taylor, who spent less than 22 weeks in the womb, was “healthy and thriving”.
Amillia had been expected to leave on Tuesday but a low white blood cell count kept her in for more checks.
She measured just 9.5in (241mm) at birth. Babies under 14 ounces were thought to be unable to survive.
Fifty babies a year are alive after abortion
A GOVERNMENT agency is launching an inquiry into doctors’ reports that up to 50 babies a year are born alive after botched National Health Service abortions. The investigation, by the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH), comes amid growing unease among clinicians over a legal ambiguity that could see them being charged with infanticide.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which regulates methods of abortion, has also mounted its own investigation.
Its guidelines say that babies aborted after more than 21 weeks and six days of gestation should have their hearts stopped by an injection of potassium chloride before being delivered. In practice, few doctors are willing or able to perform the delicate procedure.
For the abortion of younger fetuses, labor is induced by drugs in the expectation that the infant will not survive the birth process. Guidelines say that doctors should ensure that the drugs they use prevent such babies being alive at birth.
In practice, according to Stuart Campbell, former professor of obstetrics and gynecology at St George’s hospital, London, a number do survive.
“They can be born breathing and crying at 19 weeks’ gestation,†he said. “I am not anti-abortion, but as far as I am concerned this is sub-standard medicine.â€
The number of terminations carried out in the 18th week of pregnancy or later has risen from 5,166 in 1994 to 7,432 last year. Prenatal diagnosis for conditions such as Down’s syndrome is increasing and fetuses with the condition are routinely aborted, even though many might be capable of leading fulfilling lives. In the past decade, doctors’ skill in saving the lives of premature babies has improved radically: at least 70%-80% of babies in their 23rd or 24th week of gestation now survive long-term.
Abortion on demand is allowed in Britain up to 24 weeks — more than halfway through a normal pregnancy and the highest legal limit for such terminations in Europe. France and Germany permit “social†abortions only up to the 10th and 12th weeks respectively.
Doctors are increasingly uneasy about aborting babies who could be born alive. “If viability is the basis on which they set the 24-week limit for abortion, then the simplest answer is to change the law and reduce the upper limit to 18 weeks,†said Campbell, who last year published a book showing images of fetuses’ facial expressions and “walking†movements taken with a form of 3-D ultrasound.
The Department of Health was alerted three months ago to the issue of babies surviving failed terminations. In August clinicians in Manchester published an analysis of 31 such babies born in northwest England between 1996 and 2001.
“If a baby is born alive following a failed abortion and then dies (because of lack of care), you could potentially be charged with murder,†said Shantala Vadeyar, a consultant obstetrician at South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust, who led the study.
A systematic investigation of data collected through the CEMACH indicated that there are at least 50 cases a year nationwide in which babies survive abortion attempts.
“First sight of our data suggests this is happening,†said Shona Golightly, the agency’s research director. She said official confirmation of the figures would be available next year.
It is not known how many babies who survive attempted abortions go on to live into adulthood.
Paul Clarke, a neonatal intensive care specialist in Norwich, has treated a boy born at 24 weeks after three failed abortion attempts. The mother decided to keep the child, who is now two years old but is suffering what doctors call “significant ongoing medical problemsâ€.
“The survival of this child was not recorded in any official statistics,†Clarke said. “There is nothing at the moment to force abortion practitioners to account for their failures.â€
The issue will be highlighted by Gianna Jessen, 28, who survived an attempt to abort her. She is to speak at a parliamentary meeting on December 6 organized by the Alive and Kicking campaign, which is lobbying for a reduction of the abortion limit to 18 weeks.
Jessen, a musician from Nashville, Tennessee, was left with cerebral palsy but is to run in the London marathon next April to raise funds for fellow sufferers.
“If abortion is about women’s rights, then what were my rights?†she asked.
“If people are going to talk about abortion, then it’s important for them to know that these are babies that can be born alive and survive.â€
The School Shootings dominate the headlines today and probably for quite some time into the future. There is much to say and too much said already that should not have been said at all. I thought I would turn away from the spin doctors, hate mongers and the various news programs and escape into something a to distract myself from the whole horrible episode.
I went to Swenglish Rantings Weekend Radio 041307 and played the mp3 file of the lecture by Dr. Phillip C. Bobbitt broadcast by the Pritzker Library last week on Thursday, April 12th. Dr. Bobbitt begins with a brief humorous introduction and a poem by Czeslaw Milosz called “Preparation”
Still one more year of preparation.
Tomorrow at the latest I’ll start working on a great book
In which my century will appear as it really was.
The sun will rise over the righteous and the wicked.
Springs and autumns will unerringly return,
In a wet thicket a thrush will build his nest lined with clay
And foxes will learn their foxy natures.
And that will be the subject, with addenda. Thus: armies
Running across frozen plains, shouting a curse
In a many-voiced chorus; the cannon of a tank
Growing immense at the corner of a street; the ride at dusk
Into a camp with watchtowers and barbed wire.
No, it won’t happen tomorrow. In five or ten years.
I still think too much about the mothers
And ask what is man born of woman.
He curls himself up and protects his head
While he is kicked by heavy boots; on fire and running,
He burns with bright flame; a bulldozer sweeps him into a clay pit.
Her child. Embracing a teddy bear. Conceived in ecstasy.
I haven’t learned yet to speak as I should, calmly.
Dr. Bobbitt then takes us through some of the topics from his critically acclaimed book “The Shield of Achilles: war peace and the course of historyâ€.
He quotes several scholars and writers as he lays out his thesis. “After bosnia, After September eleventh we can expect a clash of civilizationsâ€. Elablorating he goes into the former states of Yugoslavia he discusses three plates coming together, Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Muslim. The clashes between India and Pakistan, or the Sunni & Shi’a conflict in the middle east.
He then goes into an explanation of the Modern State, and the Nation States. He begins with the fall of Constanpenople and the forging of the famous brass cannons. I can remember in my history reading the engineers of these cannons and how they offered the cannon to various rulers of the time and finally found the Turks who saw the wisdom and payed for the building of the Cannon. Latter on after the fall of Constanpenople, cannon of similar design were latter brought to Italy and changed the course of history there.
Bobbitt takes us to the American Revolution and the tacktics of warfare then to the tactics used in the Conquests of Napoleon.
Dr. Bobbitt makes interesting constitutional points with reference to Nation Statehood. He places the United States Nationhood not at the signing of the declaration of independence or the ratification of the US Constitution but instead with the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. He explains how there is a difference between a Nation and a State.
There is a brief explaination of what he terms the five challenges of the Nation State:
Internationalization of Culture
The Globalization of trade and finance
The Development of International Human Rights Laws
The Development of Transnational Threats
The Emergence of Weapons of Mass Destruction
Further into the lecture he discusses similarities in how the Right wing and the Left Wing “people on the left who favor affirmative action have a lot in common with people on the right who want to criminalize abortion. People on the left who want hate-speech codes look at law in the same way as people on the right feel about narcotics codesâ€
Dr. Bobbitt brings in the concept of Market States. Groups that are not connected to the State but still coheisive and formatable.
His new book “Terror and Concent” he says will cause him to be cast out of most social circles, as he lays out how wars will be fought in the future. Classic warfare is over, wars with a beginning and an end are over.
Europe still believes they know terror but Dr. Bobbitt explains that new terror is here and it is called Market State Terrorism. Market State Terrorism is Networked, Global it will outsource it’s activity, it will be privatized. “The war aim will not be the couquest of terror but the protection of civilians.”
The lecture was chok full of history Information and some poetry. He concluded with this poem:
Perhaps these thoughts of ours
Will never find an audience
Perhaps the mistaken road
Will end in a mistake
Perhaps the lamps we light one at a time
Will be blown out, one at a time
Perhaps the candles of our lives will gutter out
Without lighting a fire to warm us.
Perhaps when all the tears have been shed
the earth will be more fertile.
Perhaps when we sing praises to the sun
The sun will praise us in return
Perhaps these heavy burdens
will strengthen our philosophy
Perhaps when we weep for those in misery
we must be silent about miseries of our own
Because of our irresistible sense of mission
We have no choice
(translated by Carolyn Kizer)
For me this lecture was a good break from the 24/7 news of the School Shootings in America.
Take a break, sit back and spend the 40 minutes to listen to this Professor talk about issues that need our thought and attention.
Another poem that Dr. Bobbet has read in similar lectures is this poem by W.H. Auden that depicts a world at war. Auden’s poem ends with the goddess Thetis, who had commissioned the new shield for her warrior son. I am putting the whole poem here although I am only aware of Dr. Bobbitt reciting the ending in past lectures.
The Shield Of Achilles
W. H. Auden
She looked over his shoulder
For vines and olive trees,
Marble well-governed cities
And ships upon untamed seas,
But there on the shining metal
His hands had put instead
An artificial wilderness
And a sky like lead.
A plain without a feature, bare and brown,
No blade of grass, no sign of neighborhood,
Nothing to eat and nowhere to sit down,
Yet, congregated on its blankness, stood
An unintelligible multitude,
A million eyes, a million boots in line,
Without expression, waiting for a sign.
Out of the air a voice without a face
Proved by statistics that some cause was just
In tones as dry and level as the place:
No one was cheered and nothing was discussed;
Column by column in a cloud of dust
They marched away enduring a belief
Whose logic brought them, somewhere else, to grief.
She looked over his shoulder
For ritual pieties,
White flower-garlanded heifers,
Libation and sacrifice,
But there on the shining metal
Where the altar should have been,
She saw by his flickering forge-light
Quite another scene.
Barbed wire enclosed an arbitrary spot
Where bored officials lounged (one cracked a joke)
And sentries sweated for the day was hot:
A crowd of ordinary decent folk
Watched from without and neither moved nor spoke
As three pale figures were led forth and bound
To three posts driven upright in the ground.
The mass and majesty of this world, all
That carries weight and always weighs the same
Lay in the hands of others; they were small
And could not hope for help and no help came:
What their foes like to do was done, their shame
Was all the worst could wish; they lost their pride
And died as men before their bodies died.
She looked over his shoulder
For athletes at their games,
Men and women in a dance
Moving their sweet limbs
Quick, quick, to music,
But there on the shining shield
His hands had set no dancing-floor
But a weed-choked field.
A ragged urchin, aimless and alone,
Loitered about that vacancy; a bird
Flew up to safety from his well-aimed stone:
That girls are raped, that two boys knife a third,
Were axioms to him, who’d never heard
Of any world where promises were kept,
Or one could weep because another wept.
The thin-lipped armorer,
Hephaestos, hobbled away,
Thetis of the shining breasts
Cried out in dismay
At what the god had wrought
To please her son, the strong
Iron-hearted man-slaying Achilles
Who would not live long.
After more then a year in Prison, Iran is freeing two Swedish Spies
It is not known if Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to the region was instrumental in this gesture of mercy to the Swedish Nationals who faced a possible execution for the blatant acts of photography.
Iran pardons ‘spy’ Swedes
Published: 16th April 2007 14:30 CET
Iran on Monday pardoned two Swedish nationals jailed for photographing military installations last year and will release them later in the day, a spokesman for the foreign ministry in Tehran has said.
“Within the framework of the humanitarian efforts of Iran and following the requests of the family and repeated requests from Swedish politicians… they have been pardoned and will be freed at 6:00 pm” (1530 GMT), foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in a statement.
The two men, named as Stefan Johanssen and Jari Hjortmar, were arrested in March 2006 for taking pictures of military installations on Iran’s southern island of Qeshm and sentenced to two years in prison.
Their release comes less than two weeks after 15 British naval personnel held by Iran on accusations of illegally entering Iranian waters were suddenly pardoned and released.
Two other Europeans, German tourist Donald Klein and French boat skipper Stephane Lherbier, were also both freed earlier this year before completing 18-month sentences for violating Iran’s territorial waters.
